Leonel de castro
Leonel de Castro was born in the Federal Republic of Germany, Münster. However, its roots are well firmed in Lavandeira de Ansiães, in Trás-os-Montes e Alto-Douro, Portugal. A long-time associate photojournalist of Jornal de Notícias and its news group (including outlets such as Notícias Magazine, Volta ao Mundo, Evasões, Diário de Notícias, and O Jogo), Leonel de Castro has won several prizes and distinctions throughout his career, namely, Poy - Pictures of the Year International, Award AUTORES - Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores - best photography work, the Visão awards, the Prize Fuji Photojournalism Portugal, prize Estação Imagem, the Society for News Design’s awards, and also the prize Pacheco de Miranda for photo reports developed in Timor Leste, South Africa, and the U.S.A. His works have been showcased in various exhibitions both individual and collective, and in publications such as Pare, Escute, Olhe (Civilização Editora), Lugares Alentejanos na Literatura Portuguesa (Estação Imagem), and Um Território Musealizado – Museu da Memória Rural. Apart from photojournalism, he has worked as a lecturer at the Portuguese Institute of Photography, at the Art School of Porto, and also taught in the Master in Communication at Porto University. Castro has a degree in Social Communication by the School of Journalism, completed the Photography Course of the Art School of Porto, and is currently doing a doctorate at Minho University.
